But going by birthdays . . .

Google blew it today. Their google doodle is in honor of Giochino Rossini, who was born on leap day in 1792.

The mouse-over says “Gioachino Rossini’s 220th Birthday.”

No, Google. Rossini has only had 55 birthdays. That’s the whole beauty of leap day. He was born 220 years ago, yet (as they sing in Pirates of Penzance), if we go by birthdays, he’s a little boy of fifty-five:

I care about getting these things right, since I happen to have a childhood friend whose 11th birthday is today. Happy birthday, Steve.
